What We Do

Three Ways We Can Help

MDC offers design, consulting, and training — each grounded in 12+ years of hands-on civil engineering experience across BC.

Subdivision Design

"Your largest project cost is always construction. Having a designer who knows how to build is a real advantage."

Design

Subdivision Design

MDC is launching a subdivision design practice built on something most designers don't have — 12+ years of field experience actually building civil infrastructure. Small to medium residential subdivisions are the starting point, with a focus on producing practical, cost-aware designs that reflect what construction actually costs and how it gets built.

  • Site grading & civil servicing design
  • Road layout and lot configuration
  • Storm, sanitary & water system design
  • Regulatory submissions and municipal approvals
  • Construction cost-informed design decisions
  • Practical designs built around real field conditions

Civil Infrastructure Consulting

"Extensive experience under both the MMCD contract and the MoTT contract."

Consulting

Civil Infrastructure Consulting

Full-spectrum civil consulting for public and private sector projects ranging from $100K to $250M. Having held every role from estimator and project coordinator to superintendent, project manager, and operations manager, MDC understands the full project lifecycle — and the critical importance of planning work early to maximize safety and minimize cost.

  • Project management & construction management
  • Project planning & scheduling
  • Estimating & budget development
  • Tender document creation & procurement support
  • Contract administration (MMCD & MoTT)
  • Operations management & project delivery oversight

Professional Training

"Most foremen and superintendents at smaller contractors are promoted from the trades — skilled in the physical work but never formally taught the planning disciplines that large firms invest in. This course brings those disciplines to the broader BC civil contractor market."

Training

Professional Training

Understanding the Whys before the Hows

Practitioner-led training for civil infrastructure professionals in BC — designed by a P.Eng with 12+ years of field and management experience across Kiewit and multiple contractors. These programs deliver practical, immediately applicable skills that most coordinators and superintendents never receive through formal education. Delivered through scheduled cohorts aligned with BC's construction slow season, or custom in-house sessions available year-round.

  • Foreman Foundations — a one-day field leadership intensive for foremen and crew leads
  • Superintendent Development Program — planning and management for new and practicing supers
  • Civil Project Coordinator Pipeline — a three-level certification pathway

About MDC

12+ Years in the Field.
Now Bringing That to Design, Consulting, and Training.

McRae's Design & Consulting was founded on a simple premise: civil design decisions are better when made by someone who has spent years building the work. After 12+ years in the field — as superintendent, project manager, estimator, and operations manager — MDC is now offering civil design and consulting services grounded in real construction experience.

That career started at Kiewit, one of North America's largest and most demanding general contractors, working on major BC and Alberta infrastructure including the Portmann Highway 1 project and the Southwest Calgary Ring Road. From field engineer to superintendent, and then into Kiewit's estimating department pricing projects from $10M to $250M, that foundation shapes how MDC approaches every project today.

In any development, construction is your largest cost. Design decisions made on paper directly determine what you spend in the field. A designer who has directed crews, planned work sequences, and managed subcontractors on civil projects across BC understands those decisions at a level that goes beyond technical standards — it's the difference between a drawing that works in theory and one that works on site.

For consulting, that same full-lifecycle experience — from estimating and scheduling through to construction management and operations — means MDC can engage at any stage of your project and add real value immediately.
